Favorite Travel Quotes: Travelling is like Flirting with Life

Travelling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying,
‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station’

― Lisa St. Aubin de Terán

If you think travelers just sort of flirt with living life in different places, sometimes with different personas, you may be right. A great number of people have managed to make a life and a living on the road. It’s given rise to one of today’s most popular buzz words is “Digital Nomad.” (We know, technically that’s two words.) It’s an something that many travelers will find familiar, if not a spot-on definition of their lifestyle.

Novelist Lisa St. Aubin de Terán knows. The London-born traveler and novelist is an itinerant spirit. She left England at the age of sixteen, traveling through Europe with her exiled Venezuelan husband. Eventually, the pair settled at his family’s sugar and avocado estate in the Andes. Drawing on these experiences, she wrote her first novel, Keepers of the House, in 1982. The book won the Somerset Maugham Award.

She later moved to Italy with Husband #3, describing her experiences in Venice: The Four Seasons and A Valley in Italy. Over the years, she has continued to be an avid traveler and prolific writer. She also edited two collections of women’s travel writing: Indiscreet Journeys in 1989, and The Virago Book of Wanderlust and Dreams in 1998.

Her most recent book, Mozambique Mysteries, captures her experiences running the Terán Foundation and working in the underdeveloped village in northern Mozambique. You might say she has been flirting with life around the world, much as every traveler does.

About the Picture

Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station was one of the first railroad stations we fell in love with. It’s simple yet ornate architecture and décor is reminiscent of the bygone Golden Age of Travel in the United States. Yet, it attempts to blend into the modern world with cell phone charging stations and food courts to service the travelers that continue to trek from the tracks to the streets in the City of Brotherly Love.
