It’s a Brave New World

English author Aldous Huxley is probably best known for his novel Brave New World, about a dystopian future world. In fact, Huxley often warned of his fears of the future developed world. He was apprehensive – to say the least – about the tendency to promote modern politicians to a naive public as well-marketed commodities. He warned of the use of technology in societies susceptible to persuasion. It’s hard to say if he foresaw the combination of modern politicians using technology to market themselves and persuade susceptible societies. However, as we see that as a very real danger, Aldous Huxley is once again a very popular figure to quote.

It’s a World of Travel

While Huxley is widely known for Brave New World, his work goes far beyond. He was a published poet and essayist, and wrote literally dozens of novels, including a children’s book. He gained fame in the 1940s as a Hollywood screenwriter, and was credited for the film adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and others.

Almost forgotten are his travel books! For most his life, Huxley had a fondness for travel and wrote three travel books between 1925 and 1934. He knew first hand that, from various sources, we have preconceived notions of what a place is. We hear stories about distant lands and the people who live in them, only to find out for ourselves that those notions are not always accurate.

Which brings us again to the modern day. There is a lot of geopolitical mistrust, hostility and, frankly, misinformation out there. Everyone has an opinion about faraway places and the people who live there – or, more often, come from there. But travelers know. Those who have set foot in those lands, and met those people, know the truth. Which is why now, more than ever, we need more travelers.
