When all else fails, take a vacation!
– Betty Williams
Betty Williams is a Nobel Laureate. She is an activist. She is a member of PeaceJam, and a founding member of Community of Peace People and the Nobel Women’s Initiative, both of which work for peace with justice and equality.
She is also smart enough to know that sometimes, all you can do is all you can do. And that, when all else fails, you should take a vacation.
Why Take a Vacation?
Today’s travel quote isn’t just a funny, happy thought, it’s actual advice. Science and experience have shown us that, sometimes, the simple act of disengaging can help you resolve an issue or conflict. When you come back from that time off – whether it’s an hour or a week – you come back with a fresh mind and new eyes. Sometimes, the solution even presents itself while you’re on vacation. When you are not actively engaged in a problem, your mind has time and space to consider it from afar, and sometimes work out the solution.
More from Betty Williams
Betty Williams has much to say on or about the state of the world today. Her campaign for peace began after witnessing a horrific accident that stemmed from sectarian violence in her native Northern Ireland, and took the lives of three innocent children. She has since worked for peace and equality around the world, and spoken out mostly on conditions that affect children.
She often advocates for kindness, both as a form of protest and a daily ritual:
“To say that on a daily basis you can make a difference, well, you can. One act of kindness a day can do it.”
So that’s two things to remember: One act of kindness a day and, when all else fails, take a vacation. We can do that!
About the Photo
When you take a vacation, the idea is to disengage. That’s never been easier for us than on the Caribbean island of Ambergris Caye in Belize, where this photo was taken. (Photo by TravelLatte)
