“Adventuring can be for the ordinary person, with ordinary qualities, such as I regard myself.”
– Sir Edmund Hillary

This could be our new favorite travel quote. Ever humble, ever inspirational, Sir Edmund Hillary is arguably the greatest adventurer of our time. Yet, when he speaks, he insists that he is not extraordinary at all. He has done extraordinary things but, in the end, he’s just a “rough old New Zealander who has enjoyed many challenges in his life.”

More importantly, he insists that anyone can accomplish extraordinary things.

Far too often, when telling people about a trip we’ve taken, we hear, “Oh, I could never do that.”

Yes. Yes you can. You can accomplish extraordinary things simply by deciding and persevering. Something else Sir Edmund has said: “It all comes down to motivation. If you really want to do something, you will work hard for it.”

We can’t think of anything more extraordinary than travel. We hope you reach your travel dreams.

  1. Love travel quotes but never seen this one before: it is so true… people often think you need to do extraordinary things to have all these wonderful travel experiences, but at the end of the day we are all human and the only reason some get more adventuring than others is their motivation…

    • We had never seen that quote before either, and instantly loved it. To be fair, it wasn’t framed up as a “travel quote,” but was part of an answer in an interview he did. It’s an important message that we think more people need to remember. You don’t have to “be extraordinary” – especially in this age of Social Media with unbelievable Instagram moments that seem impossible for mere mortals to experience. Thanks so much for your comment, Anna!
