If you’ve read through enough of our favorite travel quotes, you’ve come across Holly Golightly before. The Audrey Hepburn character from Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of our favorite vagabond souls, in one of our favorite movies.

In one of the film’s many memorable scenes, Holly is sitting in the window of her New York apartment, on the fire escape, with her guitar, singing “Moon River.” We’ve always felt a kinship with the character, because of her big dreams and wanderlust spirit. We often look out of our own windows, daydreaming of the same “such a lot of world to see.”

We’re after the same rainbow’s end, waitin’ ‘round the bend…

The song’s next lines ring true for us, too, and explain our sympathy of spirit. In fact, that’s the thread that seems to connect all travelers: A longing to float down that river, around the next bend, if for nothing more than to see what’s there.

About Moon River

Although Audrey Hepburn sang it first, it’s best remembered as a hit for Andy Williams. Henry Mancini wrote the song – and the entire score – for the movie, with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Andy Williams was asked to perform it for the 1962 Academy Awards, where the film was nominated for five Oscars. It’s only fitting that “Moon River” won the award for best original song. The album Moon River and Other Great Movie Themes was rushed to release in time for the Awards, and quickly became a best seller.

“Moon River” was so instrumental to Andy Williams career (pun intended!) that his theater in Branson, Missouri, was named for it: The Andy Williams Moon River Theatre.
