“There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.”
– Jack Kerouac
First of all, a book called On the Road is itself a travel quote. (Among other things.) The seminal work by American poet Jack Kerouac has spawned everything from movies to memes to acid dreams. It can be dangerous quoting Keroac out of context, but we’re going to do it, and add our own context!
This single line is one of our favorite travel quotes because it’s so true, of life and travel.
Sure, there are perhaps a million things filling our bucket lists and To Do lists and daily dreams. When you stop and think about all of the places you’d love to see, there is nowhere to go but everywhere. When you take stock of the things you’ve always said you’ve always wanted to do, there is nothing to do but everything.
Anything less, anywhere less, can only fall short and leave you wanting more. Wanting to do more. Wanting to see more. And so all you can do is keep on going.
There is nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.
About the Photo
The spectacular image behind this Favorite Travel Quote is called Milky Way Over Quiver Tree Forest, by photographer Florian Breuer. The image shows a forest of Quiver Trees in southern Namibia. The background light is from the village of Keetmanshoop. And the phenomenal starfield is the central band our own Milky Way Galaxy.
The photograph is part of a series, and was featured as NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day on the last repetitive day of the century, 12/12/12.
