What We’re Reading in February’s Chill

What do you do when Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow and predicts six more weeks of winter? We curled up under the blankets and dreamt of warmer climes. So naturally, our reading list this week focuses on the same; places we’d like to visit for a vacation, or maybe move for the winter!

What does it cost to live in Hawaii, anyway?

Life Part 2: What Does It Cost to Live in Hawaii for a Month? By Bohemian Travelers

Jonathon Look’s Life Part 2 has become one of our favorite travel blogs lately, in part for the travel stories and in part for the inspiration as we mull over topics like retirement and expatriation. Enter the blog’s series of What Does it Cost posts written by guest bloggers who are actually living abroad. (Or, in this case, in Hawaii!) They share the details about their experiences and expenses around the globe. Like many people, we’ve threatened to move to Hawaii many times – daily, in fact – and have always wondered if it’s do-able. I wouldn’t say “Now we know,” but we know more than before!

Back in the BVI

Distant Shores: Why We Love the British Virgin Islands

We’ve followed Paul & Sheryl Shard’s sailing adventures aboard Distant Shores via their television program for a few years but, for reasons unfathomable, it did not occur to us that we could also follow along via their Blog and Twitter. (That oversight has been corrected.) Where better to find fodder for Caribbean day dreams? Their top 10 reasons to love BVI is good for landlubbers and sailors alike. It’s not a new post (dating from early 2014), but it’s a fun one to read. Especially if you, too, entertain thoughts of chucking it all to sail the world!

San Diego Travel Adventure Show – and Beyond!

Logo: Travel Adventure Show, San Diego

We really enjoy the Travel & Adventure Show, and recently we were invited to cover the San Diego edition, happening next weekend (14-15 February 2015). There are several regional editions of the show, and we attend at least one every year, including the past couple in Dallas. Unfortunately, we have other plans, but we cruised by their web site to see what we will be missing – like travel guru Rick Steves’ appearance. (We do plan on being at the Washington, DC event in March, though.) If you are in or near San Diego for Valentine’s Day weekend, you should plan on going. It’s always a great source of ideas and information, and is lots of fun!

And hey, there are much worse places to spend a weekend than San Diego! If you are only there for a few days, you should make the most of it. The San Diego Blog, the official blog of the San Diego Tourism Authority, has a great starter list of things to do in San Diego, from the iconic (Balboa Park) to the delicious (donuts and coffee? Hello!). There are some fantastic, thoroughly enjoyable suggestions to help you get to know San Diego without spending a fortune or running yourself ragged. We’ve done several of them and can’t wait to finish the list of 15 Things You Must Try in San Diego in 2015!

Of course, what we tend to do most in San Diego is spend a lazy afternoon outdoors enjoying that fabulous warm weather! Until we can get back, we’ll be here under the covers, catching up on our reading list.
