Hola Amigos, y feliz Dia de los Muertos! Did you know that this day has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years (!!!) starting with the Aztec goddess of the dead, Mictecacihuatl?In 1980, UNESCO added the celebration to its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. It's the day we celebrate our dearly departed with bright orange marigolds to attract their spirits. We decorate with brightly colored streamers (papel picado) and make ofrendas, or offerings of their favorite foods (often delicious tamales!), drinks and sweets, like the popular candy skulls, or calaveras.
It seems like a party atmosphere (similar to Halloween), but it is one of the most important days on the Latino calendar. We hope you have a wonderous day honoring your ancestors and beloved departed, and that their wisdom and council guide you safely through your days.

No shade, but how in the world did we make our way to the universe where Snoop Dogg is doing Olympic commentary?
Who's ready to play cars?Recently, we spotted this huge mural in downtown Dallas. The 100-foot toddler and his wagon full of cars is called "Transportation," and it was done in 1994 by Chris Arnold and Jeff Garrison of Eyecon.
The painting was commissioned by Dallas Area Rapid Transit to welcome the DART line into downtown - it adorns the Dallas County Public Records Building (now Rennaisance Tower parking garage), adjacent to the then-new DART tracks.
By 2010, the Street Art was covered by an advertising canvas. (Does that make it a literal "hidden gem"? Yes. Yes it does!)
When the ads came down recently, we hoped the mural would enjoy the same fate as Robert Wyland's nearby Whaling Wall mural. That beautiful artwork was covered up by ads in 2005. The ads came down during the Pandemic and have yet to return!
Unfortunately, after just one weekend spent enjoying the Dallas sunshine, Transportation was covered up by more advertising. Apparenly, it pays better than being a giant playful painting Dallasites and visitors can love and enjoy. 🤬
The moral of this mural story? Keep your eyes open and your camera ready! You never know when or where you'll find great #StreetArt, or when it will disappear again. 📸
