When planning a trip abroad, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the destination, and the seemingly endless list of tasks to tick off before you leave. But there is one very important STEP every American travelling abroad should take: Sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. The process is quick and simple, and it can make things faster and easier in case of emergency, natural disaster, civil unrest, or something as mundane as a lost or stolen passport.

When you sign up and enter your travel plans, you will automatically receive the State Department’s most current information about the country where you will be traveling or living, along with any Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts. By keeping an up-do-date contact list on file, STEP not only helps the U.S. Embassy stay in contact with you, but can help keep your family or friends up to date in case of emergency or disaster.

Once you have registered for a trip, STEP will continue to keep you updated until your trip ends, or you log in and change your location. If you travel internationally frequently, you can create an account to add and delete trips so you’re always up to date with information for where you are now, and where you are going next.

You can learn more about STEP and sign up for the program at travel.state.gov.
