When the temperatures are soaring, you should leave the pets at home when you plan on flying.

Traveling with pets can be fun and rewarding in the best of circumstances. In the worst, though, it can be downright dangerous for your four-legged friend. Although rare, it’s not uncommon for temperatures to get so hot that flights are actually cancelled. But even when it’s not that hot, imagine how warm it gets in the holding areas for pets that are flown in cargo. Even when your pooch is flying in coach (of first class, that lucky dog!), flying in the summer can be a problem.

Airlines take this into consideration, and can embargo pets when it gets too hot. Though rare, embargoes protect pets from extreme heat while they’re in holding areas and terminal facilities, when moving between terminals and aircraft, and while they’re on the planes. When there is an embargo, pets are not allowed to fly in cargo or as checked baggage, and may be prohibited from the cabin as well.

When you’re traveling with pets, make sure to check your airline’s pet embargo policy, because there are no exceptions when an embargo is in effect. According to the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association, airlines will generally work with pet parents to re-route or re-schedule flights when possible.

Air travel is stressful for pets even in ideal conditions. When it gets too hot, though, it can pose serious risks. Being confined to a carrier for long periods of time during the hottest months of the year isn’t just uncomfortable; it can lead to dehydration and heatstroke. So if you’re planning to travel with pets this summer, check the weather, and check your airlines pet policies.
